As a computer scientist, doctor, multiple founder and CEO of Amboss, Madjid Salimi has revolutionized the education and training of doctors. Now he is going one step further: in April 2024, he and his team announced the acquisition of the knowledge platform of the renowned New England Journal of Medicine – with the aim of advancing evidence-based medicine worldwide and making it accessible to everyone. According to Madjid Salimi, a qualified doctor and co-founder and co-CEO of Amboss, the examinations in medical studies should be radically changed. He cites the final medical examination as an example: “You pass with just 60% of correct answers in the multiple-choice questionnaire. You can figuratively kill someone in the exam – and you still pass!” says Salimi in the video call. He is connected from Berlin, the largest Anvil location alongside Cologne, New York and an office in Cagliari, Sardinia. According to him, there has never been anyone who has answered everything correctly; “for me, it’s unrealistic”. Salimi would rather see medical training in which students don’t have to memorize everything, but are allowed to use all knowledge resources – “Internet, anvil, what do I know” – but work under time pressure and are confronted with a zero-error tolerance. Just like in the real world. “In accounting, calculators can also be used,” says Salimi. His platform Amboss is a digital knowledge and learning structure for medical students and doctors that was launched in Cologne in 2012. Today, Amboss has a global network of four million users, 500,000 of whom are regularly active. Its customers are doctors, students and B2B institutions; the latter include renowned names such as NYU, Yale and the Mayo Clinic in the USA as well as 90% of all medical faculties in Germany and various clinics in the DACH region such as Helios, the largest European hospital chain. The cost of Amboss is \u20ac200 per year for hospital doctors, \u20ac300 per year for GPs and \u20ac100 per year for students. Recently, nursing staff were also added as a user group in Germany.
